Poppo III. from Trimberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poppo III. von Trimberg († before May 3, 1271 ) was Bishop of Würzburg from 1267 to 1271.

Poppo III. von Trimberg came from the noble family von Trimberg , the headquarters was the Trimburg near Elfershausen , today located in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen . Hugo von Trimberg also comes from this family . It can be assumed that Susskind von Trimberg was acquainted with the lineage of Trimberg.

The previous vacancy was followed by a schismatic election in the summer of 1267 . The majority of Poppo was elected by the cathedral chapter , but a large minority opted for Canon Berthold I von Henneberg . Both turned to the metropolitan , Archbishop Werner von Eppstein of Mainz , and since Poppo felt himself disadvantaged, he brought his interests to the curia . Pope Clement IV began investigating the double election. In a curia trial to which the opposing bishop did not appear, the decision was made in favor of Poppo as the legitimate bishop. Poppo initiated another process, which was to deny Berthold the election completely, but the Pope died in 1268 and the process dragged on due to the subsequent vacancy. Poppo, who died in 1271, did not live to see a final judgment. It is not known where his grave is.
