Hugo von Trimberg (* around 1230 in Wern (a), today Ober- and Niederwerrn ; † after 1313 in Bamberg- Theuerstadt) was a universally educated didactic writer of the late High Middle Ages .

From 1260 to 1309 he was rector of the clerical monastery St. Gangolf in the Bamberg suburb of Theuerstadt.

Hugo wrote Latin scripts for use by preachers, saints biographies and a directory of ancient and middle Latin authors. His main work is the epic Der Renner , written between 1296 and 1313 . The work, comprising 24,600 verses, is the most extensive didactic poem in the German language and has been handed down in several manuscripts and has been edited many times.
