Hans-Jochen Schiewer (born August 8, 1955 in Berlin ) is a German Germanist with a focus on German medieval studies and rector of the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg .

Life

Schiewer completed his studies in German and history at the Free University of Berlin in 1983 with the state examination. He was 1985 to 1989 research assistant at the Department of German Studies at the Free University of Berlin, where he was - supported by a scholarship of studienstiftung  - 1990 with a thesis on " The Black Forest sermons " to Dr. phil is doing his doctorate . He then from 1990 to 1997 Research assistant at the Department of German Studies at the Free University of Berlin, interrupted by the Keeley Visiting Fellow at Wadham College of Oxford University . With a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) , he qualified as a professor at the Free University of Berlin in 1998, where he worked as a senior assistant. After a visiting professor at the Swiss University of Friborg 2001, he received a call to the professor for older German literature and language at the Georg-August University of Goettingen . In 2003 he switched to the chair for older German language and literature at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . From April 2014 to March 2016 he was chairman of the Baden-Württemberg State Rectors ' Conference.

Act

In addition to numerous academic engagements as an editor, such as the research reports on German Medieval Studies, Medieval Sermon Studies and the Meister-Eckhart-Jahrbuch, before his tenure as Rector of the University of Freiburg he was Managing Director of the Medieval Center of the University of Freiburg and until 2010 first chairman of the German Association of Germanists .

When Andreas Voßkuhle took office as Vice President of the Federal Constitutional Court in May 2008, Hans-Jochen Schiewer also took over the office of Rector in addition to his role as Vice Rector of the University. On July 21, 2008, the university council elected him as rector and successor to Andreas Voßkuhle. At the end of January 2014, Schiewer sat down for the rector election a. a. against his rival candidate, Vice-Rector Heiner Schanz.

criticism

Hans-Jochen Schiewer was repeatedly accused of being in his position as rector using "information barriers" to prevent a full investigation of the doping past at the Freiburg University Medical Center. According to the chairman of the doping commission, Letizia Paoli, the rectorate responded very late or not at all to inquiries. Five boxes with important files were stored for years in the private apartment of a rectorate employee and withheld from the commission. Why this happened was not answered by the rector. Instead, Schiewer urged the investigation to be concluded soon. The Ministry of Science repeatedly had to mediate between Schiewer and Paoli. At the end of February 2016, the doping commission disbanded with reference to the rectorate's restriction of its work.

A previously published report by former commission member Andreas Singler on Armin Klümper's doping past had the rector's office knowingly assessed by Klümper's former lawyer Wolfgang Schmid. It was only when the Berliner Zeitung reported on Schmid's earlier work that the university abruptly broke off its collaboration with Schmid. Schiewer saw no reason to resign. Singler asked the state audit office to check the fee payments to Schmid. In addition, the internal auditing of the university and the Freiburg hospital as well as the Ministry of Science were involved.

After allegations of plagiarism against the Chief Medical Director of the Freiburg University Hospital Jörg Rüdiger Siewert in November 2014, Schiewer decided not to initiate a proper investigation procedure by the "Commission to ensure honesty in science at the University of Freiburg" and instead set up a three-person committee that had been selected by hand came to the conclusion that there was “no initial suspicion of scientific misconduct”. Schiewer was accused of having initiated an alibi investigation with a predetermined outcome. In contrast to the Freiburg committee, the ombuds committee of the University of Göttingen, at which the habilitation thesis in question was written, expressed "an initial suspicion of scientific misconduct" in a meeting in mid-January 2015.
