Burkard II (Würzburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burkard II (also written as Burchard II and Burkhard II ) was Bishop of Würzburg from 932 to 941 .

Burkard is of unknown origin. The designation later attributed to him as Count von Henneberg is not possible because the family appeared later. Burkard was initially abbot in Hersfeld Abbey from 928 to 932 . This is confirmed by a diploma from Heinrich I from 931.

He probably also owes his appointment as bishop to Heinrich I, probably at the beginning of 932. Source problems led to the fact that some lists of bishops between Bishop Thioto and himself name another bishop, but no further evidence can be found for this.

Shortly after his appointment in 932, Burkard II took part in the national synod in Erfurt , in which Heinrich I also took part. In 937 he was in Magdeburg in the establishment of Moritz monastery by Otto I. involved. Nothing is known about his activities in his own diocese.
