Diethard (Hildesheim)

Diethard (also Thiethard ) OSB († September 13, 954 ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 928 to 954 .

He is said to have been a monk in Hirsau Monastery before he became abbot in Hersfeld in 927 . After the death of Bishop Sehard, he was appointed Bishop of Hildesheim by King Heinrich I. He always remained a supporter of the royal family. At the National Council of Erfurt in 932 he was probably not represented because of the threat to his diocese from the Hungarians. But in 937 he took part in the court day at Magdeburg. After Duke Eberhard von Franken was exiled , he was transferred to the Hildesheim diocese for guarding.

Pope Agapet obliged Thiethard to support Archbishop Adaldag of Hamburg in the mission of the Nordic countries. It is not clear to what extent this had practical implications. In 948 he took part in the general synod in Ingelheim . In 933 he ordained Wendelgard as abbess of the Gandersheim monastery . He also supported the foundation of the Marienkirche in Gandersheim Abbey and consecrated it. His interests in the Gandersheim Abbey, which went beyond spiritual supervision, led to the granting of a papal privilege of 948, which guaranteed Gandersheim's independence. Bishop Thiethard bowed to this and only claimed the canonical supervision of Gandersheim. Nor did he oppose the transfer of imperial immediacy to the Ringelheim canonical monastery . The establishment of this facility is not entirely clear. It is partly dated to the time of Thiethard around 932 or 940, but partly also to the time of his predecessors. He is said to have donated a golden antependium adorned with precious stones for the high altar of the cathedral .
