Sehard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sehard († October 10, 928 ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 919 to 928 .

Nothing is known precisely about its origin. Maybe he was a billunger . It is likely that he belonged to the Fulda monastery before he was called to be bishop. He was possibly related to Abbot Sigehard (term of office 869-891). There was possibly a relationship with Bishop Nidhard von Münster , Bernhard von Halberstadt and his own successor Diethard .

King Heinrich I installed him as bishop in Hildesheim in 919. The aim was to bring this diocese more under the influence of the Liudolfinger . The connection to the royal family was likely to have been close, although no sources are available on the bishop's imperial policy. In the St. Gallen fraternity book , he appears in a list of the royal family along with important officials.

During his tenure he consecrated the west building of the Gandersheim collegiate church in 926 . He may also have consecrated the abbess Hrotsuit in 923. He also contributed to the decoration of the Hildesheim Cathedral . After his death he was buried in the cathedral near the St. Cecilia altar.
