Waldbert of Hildesheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Waldbert (also Waltbert , Uualbrath , Walbertus , Ualbertus , Valdbertus , Waldberthus , Walbergthus ) († November 3, 919 ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 908/9 to 919 . Waldbert von Hildesheim is not to be confused with Waltbert (also Walbert or Waltbraht ), Widukind's grandson , from whom the writing De miraculis sancti Alexandri (From the miracles of Saint Alexander) was commissioned.

Life

Like his predecessors Markward and Wigbert, Waltbert came from the Immedinger family , which can be traced back to the Saxon leader Widukind. For a long time it was unclear whether Waltbert was the nephew of Wigbert von Hildesheim or Wigbert von Verden . He was probably the nephew of Hildesheimer Wigbert.

It was also unclear since when he had been Bishop of Hildesheim. He probably followed his uncle in 908 or early 909. During his tenure, King Ludwig confirmed the child 's older protection and immunity privileges. Like the other bishops from Saxony , he stayed away from the Synod of Hohenaltheim from 916. This is an indication that the Saxon Duke Heinrich I also had the diocese of Hildesheim behind him. Waltbert does not seem to have played a significant role at the national level.

It is also not certain which of the abbesses of Gandesheim he consecrated. It is also unclear whether the foundation of the Ringelheim canonical monastery took place in his time or that of his predecessor. Possibly the property of the bishop was separated from that of the cathedral chapter and the cathedral provost was established.

Waltbert was buried in Hildesheim Cathedral in front of the Cecilia altar.
