Bernhard von Hadmersleben , often also called Bernhard von Halberstadt , († February 3, 968 ) was bishop in Halberstadt from 923 to 968 .

Bernhard von Hadmersleben came from the noble family of those von Hadmersleben. Before his appointment as bishop, he was the chaplain of his predecessor Sigimund von Halberstadt . King Heinrich I appointed him bishop with the approval of the Halberstadt cathedral chapter .

Bernhard's relationship with Emperor Otto I was very tense because of the Emperor's plans to establish an archbishopric in Magdeburg . Bishop Bernhard, who would have had to accept a reduction in the weight of his church in the East Franconian royal landscape, stubbornly refused canonical approval.

According to the Halberstadt diocese chronicle, Otto Bernhard was imprisoned in Quedlinburg because of his protest . On Maundy Thursday, Bishop Bernhard is said to have called for the emperor and the bishops. They had rushed to him in the expectation that he would now give in. But Bernhard banned the emperor . Thereupon Otto freed the bishop from his captivity and released him to Halberstadt. When the bishop refused any reception or honor to the emperor and the other bishops, Otto was divinely inspired to move into Halberstadt barefoot as a penitent. The emperor is said to have given the promise not to return to his founding plans during the bishop's lifetime. This only changed after the death of Bernhard in 968.

Several monasteries were founded during Bernhard's tenure. In 961 he founded Hadmersleben Monastery in his hometown and furnished it with property inherited from his father. Hadmersleben was a Benedictine monastery directly subordinate to the diocese, and the appointment of the abbess was subject to the consent of the bishop. In Halberstadt he had the so-called gate monastery built. When the cathedral collapsed in 965, Bernhard immediately ordered a new church to be built .
