Poppo I. (Würzburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poppo I († February 14/15, 961 ) was royal chancellor from 931 to 940 and bishop of Würzburg from 941 until his death.

He was the brother of Archbishop Heinrich I of Trier († 964) and probably the son of Count Heinrich from the Frankish Babenberg family ; another brother was probably Berthold von Schweinfurt , the powerful count in eastern Franconia .

Since his aunt Hadui was the grandmother of King Otto I , Flodoard referred to Poppo's brother Heinrich, as propinquus (relative) of the king. Not least because of this relationship, Poppo was chancellor from 931 to 940 and from 941 bishop of Würzburg.

Already in 940 Poppo received the right to elect the bishop himself for his diocese . Poppo promoted the newly founded cathedral school by appointing Stephan von Novara as a scholaster , which resulted in Poppo's brother Heinrich and his classmate Wolfgang , who later became the bishop of Regensburg , left the Reichenau monastery and continued their education in Würzburg .
