The Gumbertus Bible is an illustrated medieval manuscript from the late 12th century. It is one of the impressive giant Bibles that contain the complete Bible text in one volume (" Pandect "). It measures 67 × 46 cm and has 394 parchment leaves with splendid illustrations, including eleven picture pages. It is therefore one of the most important works of art in Romanesque book art .

history

The place of origin of the manuscript, which was made around 1180 to 1185, is controversial. For the price of 12 talents, it was bought with financial support from the citizens of Ansbach for the Gumbertusstift in Ansbach, at the latest in 1195, the year of death of the dean Gotebold, who is mentioned in the leading place in the handwritten dedication. After the abbey was dissolved, the codex was transferred to the consistorial library donated by Margrave Georg Friedrich in 1607 , which was incorporated into the Ansbach Palace Library in 1733 . In 1805 it came from there with other Ansbach codices to the University Library Erlangen , where it is kept under the signature Ms. 1 (manuscript 1).

From May 1 to July 27, 2014, the exhibition was dedicated to The Gumbertus Bible. Golden imagery of Romanesque manuscript in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg.
