history

On December 21, 1720, Margrave Wilhelm Friedrich von Brandenburg-Ansbach declared the previous princely house library to be a public state library. At the end of the margrave period, the palace library had over 20,000 volumes. In 1805/6 the subsequent Prussian government ordered the transfer of the larger and more valuable part of the palace library to the Erlangen University Library . In 1806 Ansbach came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1824 the library received the so-called literals of the government of the Rezatkreis (law books, commentaries, official gazettes) and has since been called the government library . In 1959 the government library was converted into a state library. In May 1972, new rooms were moved into on the second floor of the palace. In May 1988 the State Library moved into the purpose-built former Margrave Theater.
