Regional state libraries

The Bamberg State Library in the Neue Residenz am Domplatz is the largest of all ten regional libraries and one of the largest libraries in Bavaria .

The regional state libraries are part of the academic library system in the Free State of Bavaria . Their core tasks include supplying scientific literature from their respective region and collecting the literature that deals with their respective region. Organizationally, they belong to the division of the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art and are subordinate to the Bavarian State Library as an intermediate authority. With the exception of the Augsburg State and City Library, they are solely state sponsored. Together, the libraries have around 2.5 million volumes, including 19,000 manuscripts and autographs, 10,000 prints from the 15th century, and 5,100 current journals.
