This includes books , periodicals , handwritten texts (such as letters , documents , music and contracts ) as well as photos , postcards and maps . Occasionally, postcards, patents and paintings are also included.

The largest library in the Free State is the Bavarian State Library in Munich . It is the central state library in Bavaria and one of the most important European research and universal libraries with an international reputation. With around 10.5 million media units, it is the third largest library in Germany after the German National Library and the Berlin State Library and has one of the largest collections in German-speaking countries .

The largest university library is the library of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . It is also the second largest library in Bavaria. The oldest public library is the Nuremberg City Library , while the largest is the Munich City Library . The largest museum library is the library of the Deutsches Museum . In order to ensure the supply of scientific literature in all regions, there are ten state regional libraries ; the largest is the Bamberg State Library .
