The library of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg forms the museum's book collection and is also a public reference library . The library comprises over 650,000 volumes, 1695 current journals , 3380  manuscripts , around 1000  incunabula and 3000 prints from the 16th century . The inventory grows by 8,000 volumes annually. This makes it the largest publicly accessible special library for art and cultural history , folklore , folk art as well as local and regional history in the German-speaking area .

The library is based on the 7,000-volume collection of the museum's founder, Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufseß . From 1852 until the First World War , the library was built only with free copies from academies and publishers . Only in the inter-war period , after the number of donations had declined, were copies bought and the collection areas significantly expanded. The acquisition budget was only set in 1971. The collection was enriched by the Wilhelmi, Stolberg-Wernigerode and Praetorius libraries. In addition, individual book collectors gave their libraries to the museum library as permanent loans. Below is the library of the Paul Wolfgang Merkel Family Foundation , which is a deposit in the institution. In 1978 the collection comprised around 400,000 volumes. Since June 3, 2003, the library has also kept the library of the Bavarian State Trade Organization . Furthermore, the museum library has been producing the bibliography of literature on German art since 1962 .
