Peter Schreiber (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Schreiber (born June 23, 1938 in Dresden ) is a German mathematician and mathematician who deals with the fundamentals of mathematics, geometry and the history of mathematics.

Schreiber studied mathematics from 1957 at the University of Greifswald , where he received his doctorate in 1962 under Günter Asser ( investigations on the models of type theory ). In 1976 he completed his habilitation ( PhD B ) and was professor at the University of Greifswald for geometry and the fundamentals of mathematics until 2003.

He dealt with mathematical logic and basic research, for example the logic of algorithmic languages, constructive mathematics, syntax and semantics of image languages, with geometry, especially geometric constructions from the point of view of computer science and applications in art and architecture, and the history of mathematics.

In the history of mathematics, he dealt with the history of geometry (including Albrecht Dürer , Euclid ), early computing devices and algorithms, and local history of mathematics in Greifswald.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, he initiated the foundation of the Mathematics History section of the German Mathematicians Association. Peter Schreiber was a well-known popularizer of mathematics. In addition to the relevant publications, he gave numerous lectures, also abroad, on the relationship between mathematics and literature, the fine arts, architecture, music and mathematics as a topic of philately.
