List of German libraries with prints from the 16th century
While the large library registers usually state the number of incunabula that are available in the respective library, the number of prints from the 16th century is usually not taken into account. Since the handbook of historical book holdings (also known as the “Fabian Handbook”) has existed, most libraries have been fairly well informed about the quantitative composition of their old holdings. The corresponding information from the Fabian handbook regarding the prints of the 16th century is compiled here below. A minimum of 100 prints is set here as a limit. Usually the number of titles is given, but sometimes only the number of volumes.
The data in the manual come from the period between 1990 and 1997. If there were no clear information to be found there (marked by a question mark), the older estimate by Andreas Kühne: Bibliography on the literature of the 16th century was used. Munich 1995, who had carried out a letter survey in the libraries around 1990. In some cases, the number of incunabula is given as an indicator, because if there is a large collection of incunabula in a library, it can usually be assumed that there are also prints from the 16th century worth mentioning.
For corresponding lists of Austrian, Swiss and Italian libraries, see u. under "Weblinks".
