The state collection of books and engravings in Greiz was founded in 1922. It was created as the official foundation of the Reuss older line to the state of Thuringia, which was founded in 1920 . The collection essentially consists of art treasures, the court library and the collection of copper engravings from the Reuss dynasty, as well as the Satiricum, founded in 1975 as an independent part of the collection . When the exhibits were handed over to the State of Thuringia, they were made accessible to the public for the first time.

The holdings of the Greiz book and copperplate collection are available for scientific research and are also used for exhibitions in the Greiz summer palace or in other museums. In addition, the collections can be viewed as part of a visit, an event taking place or a guided tour in the Summer Palace. The district of Greiz is responsible for the collection of books and engravings .

Library

The former court library was founded around 1747 by Count Heinrich XI. Reuss Ä. L. zu Obergreiz (1722–1800) through his love of art, science and old and rare books. The collection thematically covers the following areas:

  • Works of the French Enlightenment
  • Writings on the French Revolution
  • theology
  • history
  • Natural sciences
  • Encyclopedias
  • Architecture and garden art
  • Literary magazines
  • Travelogues
  • illustrated books

In 1921 and 1922 the courtly collection was merged with the old library of the Geraer Gymnasium Rutheneum . As a result, the number of works has increased considerably and, according to the city of Greiz, now amounts to around 35,000 individual volumes covering the period from the 16th to the 21st century. The library's index is available online.

Engraving collection

The copper engraving collection comprises several thousand individual items, including a significant part of the collection from the estate of the English Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain (daughter of King George III ) and was enriched with many works from around 1795 to 1830. After the death of the princess, the collection found its way to Greiz in 1848 as part of the inheritance from the niece, Princess Caroline Reuss of the elder line .

In detail, the collection includes

Satiricum
