Francesco Bartolozzi (born September 25, 1728 in Florence , † March 2, 1815 in Lisbon ) was an Italian engraver , draftsman and publisher.

Life

Francesco Bartolozzi was supposed to learn his father's profession, a goldsmith and silversmith, but then studied at the Accademia in Florence and attended painting and drawing courses with Ignazio Hugford . He went to Venice , where he worked from 1748 in the workshop of the copper engraver Joseph Wagner (1706–1780). In 1754 he opened his own workshop. In 1764 he went to Rome. From 1764 he lived at the invitation of Richard Dalton, librarian to King George III. , in London . There he was named after some time the "Engraver of the King" with an annual salary of £ 300. On December 10, 1768 he was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts . In London, Bartolozzi developed a new technique of copperplate engraving that enabled shading and made color prints easier. In 1801 he was appointed director of the National Academy in Lisbon . He held this position until shortly before his death in 1813.

His son Stefano Gaetano Bartolozzi (1757–1821) was also a copper engraver, but mainly as an art dealer.
