Paul Monnier (born August 3, 1907 in Montana-Vermala , † February 24, 1982 in Geneva ) was a Swiss painter .

Life

Paul Monnier studied from 1924 to 1930 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, while he made numerous trips to Italy and France . From 1929 he was a member of the École des Pâquis . “The École des Pâquis was created easily and effortlessly by putting aside burdensome vanities and any personality cult. [...] These artists belong to the post-war generation that no longer dreams of the superman . They prefer the subtleties of their craft to aesthetic theories. If they are not tempted too much by laziness, alcohol, bohemianism and all kinds of scams, they are capable of a very different use than what we have done in the last thirty years. Quite actually: long live the post-war youth, about whom one has blasphemed far too much! ”( Alexandre Cingria , 1929).

In 1930 he set off on a trip through India , Indochina and Tonkin . In a letter to C. J. from Vizagapatam on June 3, 1931, Monnier wrote: “I am wasting my time trying to get this job out of my life. Painting is my job, my real and only job. "

After his return, Paul Monnier continued to devote himself only to painting. He lived in Geneva (1932–1936), Sierre ( Canton Valais , 1936–1949), Lausanne (1949–1970) and from 1970 back in Geneva.

“Paul Monnier's work is first and foremost painting . This commonplace underscores a constant attitude to remain deeply true to yourself and your profession. That is a tremendous achievement in a world where - the longer the more - creative activity is confiscated by term manipulators and wordplayers!

Frozen movement, suspended vibration, objects and people immobile in their inner loneliness - under our gaze the composition becomes a poem without words, into silent music. The circle of artistic creation closes and painting finds its own secret. ”(Bernard Zumthor, 1975).
