description

history

In its origins, Le-Fayet was a hamlet 200 meters further below the village of Saint-Gervais. It had various buildings, such as farms and a sawmill or two. These were located on the mountain flank in the area between Le-Fayet and Saint-Gervai in the so-called Le-Fayet-du-milieu and Le-Fayet-d'en-haut. Two factors contributed to the development of Le-Fayet at the end of the 19th century: the thermal facilities and the railway.

Thermal baths

Its importance as a tourist destination developed at the end of the 19th century. Le-Fayet became a well-known health resort. So thermal baths were set up in the district of Le-Fayet. The thermal baths of Le-Fayet allowed the municipality of Saint-Gervais to use the words “the baths” in the place name.

Le-Fayet's thermal springs are rich in minerals. They have a temperature of 32 ° C in every season. The medicinal water is used for ENT and dermatology.

The healing springs were discovered in 1806. After the thermal baths were built, Le Fayet received many spa guests. In 1824 Le-Fayet had almost 600 spa guests. Large, luxurious hotels were built to accommodate the wealthy clientele that spa guests were then. In 1892 all of this was destroyed. The old thermal bath was rebuilt in the same year. The rebuilt Notre Dame du Torrent chapel now serves as a memorial. Since 1991 there are new thermal baths elsewhere.

Railway / motorway

The Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet train station is also located in Le Fayet at 581 m . The PLM operated the railway line La Roche-sur-Foron-Saint-Gervais , which runs through the valley of the Arve and was opened in 1898th

In Le-Fayet there is a connection to Chamonix with the Saint-Gervais – Vallorcine railway line (1901). The Tramway du Mont-Blanc has existed since 1908 . This begins at the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet train station and leads to Saint-Gervais and finally into the Mont-Blanc massif up to an altitude of 2386 m. Le Fayet has a motorway connection and an SNCF train station.
