The regional history library of the Märkisches Kreis in Altena is a scientific library that specializes in regional studies of the Westphalia region , the Sauerland region , the South Westphalia region and, in particular, the county of Mark . Founded in 1875, the facility currently has around 110,000 books in stock. In addition, it receives more than 450 current magazines and collects yearbooks and annual reports from the Brandenburg companies. This makes the regional library one of the largest and most traditional special libraries in Westphalia.

The Landeskundliche Bibliothek not only acquires the latest publications on the Märkische Kreis and its municipalities, but also literature on Westphalia and the county of Mark. These include local and family history, folklore, art, economics, literature, geography, the Westphalian language and works on the history of Westphalia. The publicly accessible digital library catalog (OPAC) provides information on books and journals that have been acquired since 1994 and 2,500 bibliophile treasures that were published between 1510 and 1850.

User group

The library is open to the general public. However, their offer is particularly aimed at students, scientists and local historians. The holdings can only be viewed on site in the reading room, as it is a reference library .

The library is located in the Altena district building, 15 Bismarckstrasse, where the district archive is also located.
