The Wuppertal City Library is a public library in Wuppertal . The city of Wuppertal is responsible for this. In addition to the central library, the city library system includes nine district libraries. The history of the city library goes back to the year 1852, when library rooms with public book collections were set up almost simultaneously in the two town halls of the then still independent cities of Barmen and Elberfeld .

history

In the course of Bücherhalle motion calls for the establishment of a major city library was loud in the late 19th century and was followed on October 26 in 1900, in Barmen, the opening of the new public library in the Hall of Fame , and subsequently on 14 June 1902 in Elberfeld the Opening of the library on Neumarkt . In the year of the municipal reorganization of the municipalities of Barmen, Elberfeld, Beyenburg , Cronenberg , Ronsdorf and Vohwinkel into the city of Wuppertal, the inauguration of the new library building at Kolpingstrasse 8 in Elberfeld, which is still in use today, was celebrated on February 3, 1929. The director of the new Elberfeld City Library was given overall management of the public libraries, and a Wuppertal library system was created, consisting of the main scientific library in Wuppertal-Elberfeld and the Barmen district library, as the central advice center for the "popular" district libraries of Cronenberg, Langerfeld , Ronsdorf and Vohwinkel . In the time of National Socialism , the city library took part in cleansing campaigns very early on , in which so-called “un-German” literature was “eradicated” from the library with the help of “black lists” . A commemorative plaque attached to the outer facade of the central library in 2004 commemorates the book burnings and library cleanups by the National Socialists in Wuppertal.

In 1973, a uniform public library system was formed from the scientific city library and all city and youth libraries with central inventory and inner-city lending. The scientific city library, the Elberfeld city library and the music library have been combined to form the system's central library. Based on the Anglo-Saxon model, a “general information service” was set up with an extensive reference inventory and specially trained staff. In 1995 library IT was introduced. In 2009 the first self-checker was used in what was then the bookship. In the following years, the central library and the district libraries of Barmen, Ronsdorf and Vohwinkel were equipped with self-bookers. This allows users to borrow and return their media independently. Since 2006, a pay machine has been available to users in the central library to pay the outstanding fees. The external return facility, which was put into operation in 2015, enables borrowed media to be returned outside of opening hours.

Historical old stocks

One of the 74 incunabula

The Wuppertal City Library still has around 20,000 volumes of historical holdings . These include 74 incunabula , almost 400 volumes from the 16th century, 650 volumes from the 17th century and around 2,000 volumes from the 18th century.

A part of the historical old stock comes from acquired collections. The holdings of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein were taken up in 1917 as a deposit in the rooms of the city library. Also in 1917 the library of the Natural Science Association, comprising almost 4,000 volumes, was taken over as a deposit. The old high school library with around 12,000 volumes, which went back to the Elberfeld Latin School founded in 1592 and in which predominantly early editions of ancient authors and educational specialist literature are represented, took place beforehand . Around 25,000 volumes of the valuable old stock were lost during the Second World War. In a large-scale salvage operation, the library's valuable holdings were initially relocated to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and then transferred to a bomb-proof cellar near Cologne-Mülheim for increased protection . In the last days of the war, the special stock fell victim to looters who caused a fire that completely destroyed the stock. These included 25 incunabula, valuable manuscripts and autographs , numerous prints from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a large part of the Bergisch native literature.

organization

The city library is operated as a public facility by the Wuppertal city administration and is assigned to the 2.2 Culture & Sport and Security & Order division within the city administration. The website of the city library and the Facebook page of the friends' association provide information on current developments, campaigns and events. This gives users an overview of what the city library has to offer.

There the youngsters will find novels and non-fiction that are tailored to their needs for their leisure time . PlayStation , Wii and PC games as well as a wide selection of audio books complete the offer.
