Wolfgang van der Briele

Ernst Wolfgang van der Briele (born May 16, 1894 in Halberstadt ; † October 3, 1983 ) was a German studies scholar and long-time director of the Wuppertal City Library .

Life

He was the son of the Halberstadt school director Konstantin van der Briele and his wife Lucie nee Sachsenberg. His paternal ancestors came from Holland and Flanders. After attending grammar schools in Dessau and Clausthal, Wolfgang van der Briele studied at the University of Leipzig and then moved to the University of Rostock . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1917 he received the draft order to participate in the First World War. After the end of the war, he entered the school service in 1918 and became an assistant at the university library in Rostock the following year. In 1920, Wolfgang van der Briele moved to the Dortmund City Library as an unskilled worker . He soon rose to the position of librarian and in 1927 took over the Elberfeld City Library as director . From 1929 was the director of the Wuppertal City Library (Barmen-Elberfeld).
