The Natural Science Association Wuppertal e. V. (NVW) is one of the oldest scientific associations in Germany, based in Wuppertal . The now non-profit association was founded on April 9, 1846 by Johann Carl Fuhlrott , the first person to describe the Neanderthal , under the name of the Natural Science Association of Elberfeld and Barmen .

Effective range

The area of ​​activity mainly comprises the Rhenish Slate Mountains with special consideration of the Bergisches Land . In addition to imparting basic knowledge of natural history to the interested population, the association is active in scientific research in the field of activity and has published numerous scientific publications, especially in the annual reports.

The association is divided into the sections botany , entomology , geography , geology , microscopy , mycology and ornithology . There is also the youth group that specifically addresses children and young people.

Until the Fuhlrott Museum was closed , the association had the function of a patronage association .

Personalities

Board

From 2001 to 2013 Wolf Stieglitz was chairman of the association. Antonia Dinnebier headed the association from 2013 to 2019 . From March 2019 Rainer Mönig will be the chairman of the association.

Other people on the board: Franz Gusinde , Michael Schmidt and Michael Schedel. The previous chairman, Wolf Stieglitz, is now the managing director.
