Friedhelm Nippel (born February 1, 1944 in Hückeswagen ; † September 2, 1993 in Wermelskirchen ) was a German entomologist specializing in butterflies ( lepidopterology ).

Live and act

Nippel attended elementary school in Wermelskirchen , then from 1955 he attended the modern language grammar school and in 1960 switched to the natural science grammar school in Remscheid . At the age of 14 he developed his interest in butterflies and at the age of 18 he published an article in the entomological journal for the first time . In 1959 Nippel became a member of the Entomological Society in Düsseldorf, two years later he joined the working group of Rheinisch-Westphalian Lepidopterologists.

In 1961 a serious traffic accident forced him to change his previous life plan. He dropped out of school and began training as a chemical laboratory assistant in Remscheid in 1963 . In 1966, after passing the exam, he was employed as an employee at the Municipal Chemical Investigation Office in Remscheid. From 1969 he belonged to the Natural Science Association in Wuppertal (NVW) and helped set up the Fuhlrott Museum in Wuppertal, the association was the patronage association of the museum. With the establishment of the Entomological Section in 1973 he was one of the most active of the group. Ten years later he took over the leadership of this section, which he held until his death. Around 350 different events such as lectures, conferences and excursions were carried out during his time. Nippel has been intensively involved in recording the butterfly fauna of the Bergisches Land since 1970, about which he published a lot. At the same time he put on a lepidopterological collection, which was exhibited in the Fuhlrott Museum.

An important article on the butterflies of the Bergisches Land was written in 1971 together with Helmut Klinker and Willibald Schmitz. In the period that followed until 1987, all butterfly families in the Bergisches Land were recorded here, and 834 large butterfly species were presented. He had collected and published the results of faunistic research in the Burgholz state forest in Wuppertal and Eifgental in Wermelskirchen, but also in the southern Eifel (Mehlental near Prüm) and in the greater Wiltingen area (Rhineland-Palatinate) and other regions. In his research in the field of breeding butterflies he was able to answer many open questions. Nippel paid special attention to protecting the butterflies' habitat. He also acted as a consultant on the conservation of biotopes that could be placed under nature protection.

Nipple died in 1993 after a long illness. A few months earlier he had organized the meeting of the International Entomological Association, of which he was vice chairman. He left a wife and three children.

After the Fuhlrott Museum was closed in 2008, the city of Wuppertal donated the lepidopterological collection, in which he had played a major role, to the Aquazoo - Löbbecke Museum in Düsseldorf in 2013 .

Publications

Nippel was responsible for numerous scientific publications on lepidopterology in the region. An overview of his publications was created by W. Girnus, H. Klinker and G. Swoboda and included in the news of the Entomological Association Apollo (NF 14, no.3; 217-220, 1993) and in the journal Melanargia (V, H. 4; 111-115; 1993) published.
