history

Look at the library (1989)

The beginnings of the library go back to the year 1564, when the Zittau council took over parts of the book collection of the secularized Franciscan monastery . The council library was given its first domicile in 1607. During his tenure as rector of the grammar school, Christian Weise also headed the council library from 1678 until his death in 1708. He significantly expanded the book collection.

In 1661, Mayor Heinrich von Heffter ordered the construction of a new west wing on the former monastery owned by the city . The baroque hall of this yeast building with the famous yeast gable became the new location of the council library in 1709. There it survived the destruction of the city in 1757 unscathed, while the council archives housed in the town hall were lost.

The collection was also significantly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries. Her acquisitions included the estates of Christian Adolf Pescheck , Carl Gottlob Moráwek (1816–1896), Alfred Moschkau , Moritz Oskar Sauppe (1844–1928) and Johann Carl Heffter .

In the middle of the 20th century, the building was in need of renovation. The necessary work was prevented by the Second World War and was not carried out after the end of the war.

In 1951 the council library was merged with the public library and relocated from the Heffter building to a former bank on Bahnhofstrasse. The library has been called Christian-Weise-Bibliothek since 1954 . Between 1978 and 1984 the writer Klaus Günzel was in charge of the old holdings that had emerged from the council library.

Between 1986 and 1987 several valuable historical items in the library disappeared. These were thefts initiated by the Commercial Coordination in order to sell the pieces to the Federal Republic for foreign currency .

After 1990 the library came back under the sponsorship of the city of Zittau and was transferred from it to the district.

A building was converted into a district archive on the barracks grounds of the dissolved officers' college of the land forces of the NVA in Zittau. Since 2001, the old scientific inventory, which has not been adequately accommodated, has also been in this house. The public lending library moved to the renovated stables in 2002 and the Bahnhofstrasse location was given up.

On January 1, 2004, the library was privatized and incorporated into the district's own culture and further education company, Löbau-Zittau. As a result, there was no public support for the library journal, which had to discontinue its publication after 30 issues. The series has been continued by the Oberlausitzer Verlag since 2004 under the new title Oberlausitzer Heimatblätter .
