The Obschtschi Syrt ( Russian Общий Сырт ) is a low mountain range in the east of the European part of Russia . It branches off from the Southern Urals north of Orenburg and extends in a south-westerly direction to the Volga .
The 500 km long mountain range forms both the watershed between the Volga and Urals rivers and part of the border between Europe and Asia . In the eastern part it reaches heights of up to 405 meters. The north slope of Obshchy Syrt is covered by deciduous forests, while the southern slope for Caspian basin towards Steppe character has.
