The Mainz University Library is the information and literature supply system of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . It consists of the central library with the Georg Forster building, seven departmental libraries and the university archive.

history

The library holdings of the electoral university, which was established in 1477 and ceased operations in 1798, became the property of the city of Mainz in 1805 and has been kept in the Mainz city library ever since .

The construction of the university library began in 1946 when the University of Mainz reopened. Decentralized libraries were set up at the beginning of post-war history. Only then was the central library founded, which moved into its own new building in 1964.

Since the first decade of the 21st century, departmental and institute libraries have been merged into interdisciplinary departmental libraries.

Collections

The library has a collection of manuscripts from the family of the romantic Clemens Brentano (1778–1842), which, like other autographs, documents and medieval manuscripts from the university library, have been kept on permanent loan in the manuscript department of the Mainz City Library since 1998 .

In 2013, the Forum for Intercultural Research on France (FIFF) superseded the collective focus " Research on France: Culture - Society - Regions", which was funded by the German Research Foundation from 1991 to 2011 . The FIFF continues to acquire interdisciplinary documents in the cultural and social sciences. It will be funded again by the DFG until the end of 2015 as part of the “Outstanding Research Libraries” program in order to expand its previous, regionally focused profile in an inter- and transcultural perspective.

The USA Library collects interdisciplinary literature and information about the United States of America with a social, cultural and historical focus. It was left as the former library of Lindsey Air Station after the US Army withdrew from Camp Lindsey in 1993 .

The archive for the music of Africa has existed since 1991 and contains a collection of modern African music on recordings in various formats, unique in Germany. The current holdings of the archive are approx. 10,000 sound carriers, some of which go back to the 1940s. Regional focuses are Ethiopia, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Congo (Ex-Zaire), Nigeria and Tanzania.

It sees itself as the historical memory of the university and stores the files of the university management, the university administration, the departments and institutes as well as the student self-administration. The holdings of the archive are supplemented by around 40 bequests from Mainz professors and university history collections. The archive supports research on the history of Johannes Gutenberg University and is open to everyone.
