Magazine II at the “Open Magazine Day” 2013

The Lippische Landesbibliothek / Theological Library and Mediothek in Detmold is a scientific universal and regional library for Ostwestfalen-Lippe . The responsible body for this public institution is the Landesverband Lippe .

The library is housed in a classical palace , which was built as a private house and residence by the Detmold merchant and building contractor Johann Wilhelm Ebert from 1842 to 1843. The library has been located there since 1886, after it was acquired by Prince Woldemar .

The library is geared towards supporting regional universities and research institutions in teaching and studying with around 550,000 volumes of literature and 1,200 magazines from all subject areas. In addition, it is also used for general further training in school and at work. More than 100,000 volumes are systematically arranged in open shelves accessible. The library has several special collections. The "Lippe Regional Documentation", the "Lippische Literaturarchiv" and the historical inventory of the Detmold Court Theater are important for the Lippe region . The Lippische Landesbibliothek cooperates very closely with the Detmold Music Library, which combines the former state library holdings with music-related literature, the music library of the University of Music and the musicological holdings of the Musicology Seminar of the University of Paderborn as a large loanable inventory of sheet music and music literature.

history

The history of the Lippe regional library goes back to the book collection of the versatile educated and cultivated Lippe sovereign Count Simon VI. (1554-1613) back. In 1614 Count Simon VII donated this basic stock of literature to the Latin School, today's Leopoldinum Gymnasium , as the “Count's Public Library” in Detmold. This collection was also known under the names library in the schoolyard or school library .

The actual founder of the Lippische Landesbibliothek was the regent Princess Pauline , who was influenced by the educational ideals of the Enlightenment . She merged the Count's library with other book collections from the Principality of Lippe to form the “Princely Public Library”. The library was given its current name in 1919, when the former sovereign property was transferred to the Free State of Lippe after the First World War. After the Second World War and the subsequent unification of the Free State with North Rhine-Westphalia , ownership passed to the newly founded Landesverband Lippe.

Due to capacity problems and mold growth in the 1980s magazine II, planning for a new magazine started in 2007. The construction work for this took place from 2011 to 2013, on March 8, 2013 the newly built Magazine II was inaugurated. The library now has a storage capacity of around 1 million titles.

Since September 2013, the holdings from the former theological library and media library of the Lippische Landeskirche can be borrowed from the Lippische Landesbibliothek. At the same time, the library changed its name and logo. Instead of the previous Lippische Landesbibliothek , it is now called the Lippische Landesbibliothek / Theological Library and Mediothek . Since August 2015, the state library has been connected to the music library of the Detmold University of Music via a shared foyer and a shared catalog and booking system, which has built a new building on the neighboring property of the former district military replacement office. Together with the State Archive of North Rhine-Westphalia (East Westphalia-Lippe Department), the University of Music, the Network of Music Colleges for Quality Management and Teaching Development, and the Musicological Seminar, the Lippische State Library has since formed the Science-Library-Music forum .
