The University Library of Bayreuth is a service facility of the University of Bayreuth , one of the young universities in Germany. Its main task is to provide literature and information to scientists and students at the local university. However, it is also available to interested parties and students aged 16 and over from the region. The university library is a member of the Bavarian Library Association . With 2.3 million media, it is one of the largest libraries in Bavaria .

history

After the university was founded in 1972, construction of the university library began in 1973. Initially, the central library was located in the city center, in today's IWALEWA building on Münzgasse. In 1975 she moved to the former factory of the Zappe curtain factory on Justus-Liebig-Strasse. In the autumn of 1975, the library of the 2nd Bayreuth Department of Education at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz was affiliated as a branch library for Educational Sciences (later: Cultural Studies).

In 1987 the central library was able to move into the new building on the university campus in the south-east of the city. In 2001 it received an extension for the Faculty of Cultural Studies, which until then had been located on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz. The cultural studies branch library was thus integrated into the central library. Alternative magazines exist at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz (additional GSP magazine) and, since 2010, in the building of the BayCEER research facility on Dr.-Hans-Frisch-Straße.

Four other branch libraries were given their domicile before the central library on the university campus. They have since been housed in the corresponding faculty buildings. With the establishment of the Faculty for Applied Natural Sciences, the mathematics / physics branch library received a corresponding extension in 1998. An extension for the Law and Economics branch library was moved into in 2011.

Due to an acute need for renovation with costs in the millions, the university management decided to largely give up the location on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz (GSP). As a result, the library on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz was closed on May 31, 2017.

construction

The University Library of Bayreuth is a single-layer library system . The central library and branch libraries form an organizational unit with central management despite the spatial separation. The central library is responsible for media acquisition and processing. It also houses special collections, a large part of the stored holdings and, as an integral part, the humanities branch library. The individual branch libraries offer special literature for individual scientific subjects and are usually located in close proximity to the other spatial facilities of the associated department. The book and media collections there as well as the open access holdings of the central library are freely accessible according to the Regensburg network classification .
