The old library of the Ottobeuren Abbey ( lat. Bibliotheca Ottenburana ) is the monastery library of the Upper Swabian monastery of Ottobeuren . It is also accessible to outsiders for scientific purposes.

history

The origins go back to the founding time of the monastery around the year 764. A separate scriptorium can only be proven in the 12th century.

In the 18th century, as part of the new construction of the baroque monastery complex, the library room was stuccoed by Johann Baptist Zimmermann and decorated with the magnificent ceiling paintings by Elias Zobel . The homogeneous baroque interior design is an important part of the total work of art in the monastery architecture.

During the secularization of 1802 the monastery was temporarily dissolved, but some monks were allowed to stay in Ottobeuren. The library room was sealed, and a not insignificant part of the books remained in Ottobeuren. In 1829, part of the inventory was transferred to the Augsburg district and city library on two carts. The rest stayed in Ottobeuren. In 1835 the monastery was rebuilt as a dependent priory. On November 25, 1842, King Ludwig I decided "that the Ottobeuren monastery library should be preserved in its integrity and unity and that it be left to the Ottobeuren monastery."

In 1844 the remains of the monastery libraries of the Franciscans in Lenzfried near Kempten as well as of the Knights of the Cross and the Augustinian Hermits in Memmingen came to Ottobeuren. When Ottobeuren was released from its dependence on the Sankt Stephan monastery in Augsburg in 1918 and raised again to an independent abbey , the Augsburg monastery gave the library a number of Ottobeuren manuscripts and books that it had acquired as an antiquarian during the 19th century. In 1925 the Ottobeuren Abbey acquired the archive, the paraments, the liturgical equipment and the extensive collection of paintings of the former Carthusian monastery in Buxheim from Count Waldbott von Bassenheim . The last thing that followed was an extensive collection of building plans with the 1964 donation from the Ingolstadt City Archives. Some scenes from the Fassbinder film Martha (1974) were filmed in the library .

Situation today

In addition to many medieval manuscripts , 457 incunabula and early prints, the library contains around 15,000 pigskin bound tomes . Today the Free State of Bavaria and the Abbey of Ottobeuren provide support. The reference library can only be used after written registration and approval.

Visiting the premises was possible when visiting the monastery museum from Palm Sunday to All Saints Day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Free State of Bavaria is currently restoring the library, which is therefore no longer accessible.

Movie

The library was the location for the film Martha by Rainer Werner Fassbinder .
