The German Meteorological Library is the largest scientific special library for meteorology in Germany and one of the largest and oldest in Europe and worldwide. As part of the special collection area program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 1949, she received the national collection contract for the world-wide published meteorological and climatological specialist literature and climate maps. The library is housed in the headquarters of the German Weather Service in Offenbach am Main and is open to the public.

history

It was founded in 1847 at the suggestion of Alexander von Humboldt as a handbook of the Royal Prussian Meteorological Institute in Berlin, which was transferred to the Reich Weather Service in 1934 . In 1957 the library moved to the new building of the central office of the German Weather Service, founded in 1952, in Offenbach am Main .

Since 1961 the library has had the tasks of library, specialist information center and self-publishing, which still exist today.

Library

The holdings of the German Meteorological Library comprise approx. 186,000 media units and approx. 1,000 journals and series. The oldest holdings go back to the 15th century. The library owns 21 incunabula ( cradle prints ), which are listed in the complete catalog of the cradle prints . 14 workplaces are available to visitors. Five of them are equipped with a PC and Internet access and offer the opportunity to conduct scientific research in the in-house literature database "METLIS" - the meteorological literature information system - introduced in 1990.

All documents in the literature database are available in the library and, with some restrictions, can be viewed in the reading room after registration. Employees of the German Weather Service are permitted to borrow, and interlibrary loans are available to the general public using the library seal B 23. Order searches are carried out for a fee.

The “Fachinformationsdienst Meteorologie”, which is set up and supported by the DWD , continues to develop the previous special collection areas of meteorology and meteorological maps in accordance with the current guidelines of the German Research Foundation ( DFG ).

The self-publisher publishes various series on meteorological topics such as B. "Reports of the German Weather Service", "History of Meteorology in Germany" or "Annals of Meteorology". He has also been publishing the advanced meteorological training magazine "promet" since 1971.
