Bibliotheca publica hallensis
The Bibliotheca publica hallensis in Schwäbisch Hall was the city's council library officially founded in 1575. It is now in the city archives.
history
Book purchases and expenses for bookbinders have appeared in the city's accounting books since 1484. On March 14, 1575, a formal council decision was made to set up a “bibliotheca publica”. Despite its name “public library”, the public was not allowed to use it. The library served to provide the councilors and their legal advisers with specialist literature. The stock developed continuously through regular annual acquisitions, which were only omitted in years of unusual financial hardship in the city. In the early years, the books were bought at the Frankfurt book fairs . Access from private libraries to Hall officials were just as important. Entire private libraries were also acquired.
Accommodation
The council library was always located in the town hall , but there in different rooms. A library was set up in the 18th century . Today the library, which contains around 5,300 titles, is in the vaulted cellar of the town hall. This library room was designed in 1947/48 by the Haller architect Eduard Krüger (1901–1967).
