Archive building

Archive building

The Stadtarchiv Wasserburg am Inn has been housed in a newly built purpose- built archive building at 10 Kellerstraße since 2002 , where it was possible for the first time to combine all of the archive's holdings under one roof. The city archive was located at the eastern end of the building complex with apartments, offices and medical practices, which was built to cover the parking garage on Kellerstrasse in the direction of the old town, which was planned in 1991.

The building consists of three full floors and a gallery floor. Because of the low building depth of six meters, all rooms could be designed without columns and optimally equipped with mobile shelving. The large area loads of a maximum of around 2900 kg per shelf are absorbed by the reinforced concrete construction. The ventilation technology is housed under a barrel roof on the gallery floor.

Behind the city archive is the entrance to an old beer cellar , which is being renovated by the “Kellerfreunde”, a department of the Heimatverein für Wasserburg and the surrounding area, and made accessible through regular tours.

Municipal archives

The city archive has been keeping documents, files and official books of the city administration since 1301. The old holdings contain the extensive and complete tradition of the official books and files of the council and foundation administration from the 14th century, the almost complete series of council minutes since the 16th century Century and the relatively rich document tradition of around 5000 documents from 1301 onwards.

The more recent holdings of files and official books of the city magistrate (1818-1919), city council (from 1919) and the city administration (since the 19th century) have been extensively preserved.

Library

In addition to the municipal archives, the city's old council library, which dates back to the 16th century, is also part of the city archive. It preserves books that were published after secularization and the like. a. came to Wasserburg through purchases of former monastery libraries such as those from the Attel , Gars and Benediktbeuern monasteries . The library was supplemented by holdings from the first Wasserburg reading clubs from the 19th century.

The city archive is also responsible for the newer volumes from the administrative libraries (including the official gazette collection ) and current literature on Bavarian and Wasserburg history. The municipal archive's reference library comprises a total of around 20,000 volumes.

Collections and bequests

In addition to the documents of the city administration, the holdings are supplemented and enriched by private documents.

The image archive with around 15,000 photographs includes photos of the Wasserburg cityscape and what is happening in the city and dates back to 1870. In the historical documentation, documents from non-urban institutions, associations, companies, etc. are actively collected (publications, posters, brochures, etc.) and local newspapers and Internet publications, for example, are evaluated.

In addition, the city archive also accepts private documents, collections or bequests, for example documents from associations, writers or politicians.
