The Koblenz City Library is the city of Koblenz's public library . The central library, the children's and youth library and the music library / media library have been housed in the Forum Confluentes on the central square since 2013 . In addition, the city library is the only library in Rhineland-Palatinate to maintain two book buses , a student book bus for the primary schools and a “large book bus” for the city districts. There are also three district libraries in Horchheim , on the Pfaffendorfer Höhe and on the Karthauser .

history

Beginnings as a public library

The central library was housed in the Dreikönigenhaus until 2013

The library emerged from the "Citizens' Library" founded in 1827, which received its basic stock from the estate of the Neuendorfer pastor and educator Joseph Gregor Lang . In 1977 she moved into the Dreikönigenhaus in the old town . The children's / youth library and the music library were housed in the neighboring Bürresheimer Hof . There was also an exhibition and event room in the old castle . Until the end of the 1980s, the city library was also a scientific library for Koblenz and the surrounding area. This function was then taken over by the Rheinische Landesbibliothek Koblenz .

The library participates in the German interlibrary loan system ( library seal 69) and in the regional media delivery service LITexpress. She is a member of Section 2 of the German Library Association . In recent years, the city library has consistently recorded around half a million loans per year. The number of visitors is over 150,000. Almost 11,000 active users are currently registered.

Relocation to the Forum Confluentes

The rooms of the city library in the Forum Confluentes

The project partners ECE and STRABAG realized a unique symbiosis of retail and culture on the central square of Koblenz . The inner-city shopping center Forum Mittelrhein opened on September 26, 2012. In addition, a cultural hybrid was created with the Forum Confluentes , which will offer a new home to the Middle Rhine Museum , the city library and the Romanticum Koblenz from June 20, 2013 . Both buildings are connected by the new central square, a square with a 6,000 m² open space as well as a green island and water feature.

With the culture building, the city is solving some problems with the museum and city library. The facilities, distributed over several locations, were neither barrier-free nor did they meet the fire protection regulations required today . Around 4,100 m² are available for the new city library with a target inventory of 220,000 media. In the first year after the move, 340,000 people visited the city library, doubling compared to 2012. The new beach resort on the central square was very well received by the people, which shows a further increase in 2014 to 403,773 visitors.

Duration

The media offer includes books , magazines , DVDs , Blu-rays , CDs , the Internet and DVD-ROMs for work and school, further education, entertainment and leisure activities. The library is also responsible for providing comprehensive information and media to the people of Koblenz.

The entire inventory consists of the historical old inventory (around 20,000 books from before 1850) and magazine inventory (including the estates of Alexander Baldus (writer), Hanns Maria Lux (author of young books), Fritz Michel (historian), Fritz von Unruh (writer) and Edmund Dondelinger ( Egyptologist)) as well as the “Koblenz Newspapers Archive” from almost 200,000 media units. The main focus of the media offer of the city library is the regional studies (Rhineland and Koblenz), the four thematic libraries school and learning, job-study-training, parents and law in everyday life. The city library also has media offerings in all common subject areas.

Services

The library sees itself as a customer-oriented media competence center and public service facility of the city of Koblenz. It offers free access to information and media. This includes nine public Internet access points. The library also acts as a promoter of media and reading skills in children. The children's library and the three district libraries regularly organize handicraft, creative and reading afternoons. They also offer introductions to the library. The reading competition (city and district decision) takes place annually in the rooms of the children's and youth library. Since 1996, the city library has been supported by the Reading and Book Association , especially in the area of reading promotion, events and the "historic old stock" . The library has been participating in the reading summer club in Rhineland-Palatinate since 2009.
