Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenics

The Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism was founded on January 19, 1957 by Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger of Paderborn as an institute for denominational and diaspora studies . The institute was named after Johann Adam Möhler , a Tübingen theologian. On the Roman Catholic side, with his work Symbolism or Representation of the Dogmatic Opposites of Catholics and Protestants, according to their public confessions, he is considered the founder of scientific research into the doctrinal differences between the various denominations, i.e. denominational studies .

Tasks and organization

The institute's task is the scientific research and the presentation of doctrine, the celebration of church services, piety and all other expressions of religious life of the various Christian denominations and denominations. The focus here is on the churches and free churches that emerged from the Reformation as well as on Eastern Church Studies.

The institute is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Paderborn and supported by the Association for the Maintenance of Scientific Research in the Field of Ecumenism

The president of the institute is the respective Archbishop of Paderborn. Management is the responsibility of the respective director of the institute. Wolfgang Thönissen has been the managing director since 1999 , the directors are Michael Hardt, Burkhard Neumann and Johannes Oeldemann.

The institute is affiliated with the Paderborn Theological Faculty .

The institute has a special scientific library with around 160,000 volumes. The holdings have been researchable online since 1990. The institute is active in research, teaching and dialogue.
