The Bamberg University Library is a central service facility of the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg . The university library is a member of the Bavarian Library Association . With 1.6 million media, it is one of the largest libraries in Bavaria .

history

The beginnings of the University of Bamberg go back to the "Seminarium Ernestinum", which was founded in 1586. After the secularization of 1802 / 1803 belonging to the former Bishopric of Bamberg Monasteries were dissolved and abolished the former Bamberg University. The libraries of these institutions were brought together in the Electoral Library , founded in 1803 , the name of which changed with the political situation: from 1806 it was called the Royal Library , from 1918 the State Library . In 1965, Fridolin Dreßler moved the library, now called the Bamberg State Library, with the holdings of the old university from the Jesuit College to the New Residence on Domberg. The Philosophical-Theological College was able to take over the historic library hall, which was completed in 1791. In 1973 today's university library was created as the library of the Bamberg University of Applied Sciences from the merger of the libraries of the Philosophical-Theological University and the Bamberg University of Education . In 1979, the only state comprehensive university in Bavaria was renamed a university.
