The State Garden Show Bamberg 2012 was the 16th Bavarian State Garden Show and took place from April 26 to October 7, 2012 in Bamberg . The event concentrated on the site of the former ERBA textile factory in the north of Bamberg, but included the entire city.

Emergence

The central event site was created in the context of the 1992 derelict textile factory ERBA (ERBA = He Langen Ba mberg) on an island in the northern district Gaustadt . In this way, a north park was created in addition to the historic southern Bamberg city ​​park Hain . In the course of the construction work that began in 2009, a fish pass was built, which makes the Regnitz , which is closed at this point by a small power plant, cross again for fish and other river creatures.

The listed factory halls from the 19th century were rebuilt as part of the garden show. Since then, they have served the Bamberg University , which is suffering from lack of space, for lectures, among other things. Part of the former factory building was converted into student apartments. Furthermore, a continuous network of paths was laid out along the Regnitz. This made the river more accessible and the two city parks on the Regnitz have been connected to each other ever since. At the foot of the monastery Michelsberg one was Weinberg created which ties in with the earlier to 200 years ago cultivated in this area winemaking tradition. Bamberg's gardening town, which, with its centuries-old culture, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg , was also included in the state horticultural show .

Points of contention

The demolition of two lock keeper's houses on the site of the textile factory met with broad resistance from the population. The opponents listed the historical connection with the history of the site, the lack of need for demolition and the chances of integrating the beautiful houses from the early 20th century. Proponents of the demolition plan argued that the view of the park would be blocked and that additional costs would arise from a connection under fire protection law. One of the two houses, the assistant house, was demolished at the end of 2009. A buyer and a usage concept are being sought for the second house that is still standing.
