The Bavarian State Horticultural Show in 1998 was the eighth state horticultural show from April 24 to October 4, 1998 in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate . The site of the former was under the motto "change of heart" sewage treatment plant on Ludwigskanal recovered and converted into a park landscape. Since Neumarkt had applied for the state horticultural show at short notice, there were only three years available for planning and building the site, as is usually the case.

Application, award and planning

Newly designed buildings of the former sewage treatment plant

In the 1990s, the Neumarkt city council first considered applying for a state horticultural show. However, since the neighboring Amberg had already been awarded the contract for 1996 and the likelihood of having another state horticultural show in the Upper Palatinate in the foreseeable future was extremely low, these considerations were discarded.

The Lower Bavarian Landshut had already received the bid for the State Garden Show in 1998, but had to give it back in 1994 due to financial difficulties. On the initiative of the then Lord Mayor Alois Karl , the city of Neumarkt submitted a short-term application for 1998 and was awarded the contract in February 1995.

Since a new sewage treatment plant on the outskirts of the city was not put into operation until the beginning of the 1990s, the buildings and grounds of the old plant were available for the state garden show. This area is located on both sides of the Ludwig Canal between the clinic and the Holzheim district . The site has an area of 17 hectares, and the Schwarzachauen adjoining in the north-east were also included in the concept, so that the area of the State Horticultural Show increased to around 30 hectares.

The city of Neumarkt provided the equivalent of around 13.8 million euros for the design of the site. Two landscape architecture offices were commissioned with the planning, a specially founded GmbH organized the planning and implementation of the show. The former buildings of the sewage treatment plant were included. For example, the digestion tower was converted into an exhibition building with a lookout tower, and the sludge basins were designed as water gardens.

The city of Neumarkt pursued a concept of sustainability from the start. Even after the state garden show, large parts of the site were to be retained as a new city park. In addition, the area was created as a floodplain. The Schwarzach and Maierbach brooks flowing through the site have been renatured and given expansive bank zones that offer enough space for floods. The road network was largely relocated to footbridges and bridges.

In the city center, green areas and parks were partially renovated; a new footpath connection between the old town and the exhibition grounds was created. The station Neumarkt has been completely refurbished and redesigned, on the former site of the freight station, a new bus station is set up.

execution

The State Horticultural Show was opened on April 24, 1998 by Minister of State Hans Zehetmair and Lord Mayor Alois Karl. Up to October 4, 1998, around 1.1 million guests had visited the state horticultural show. The program on the individual days of the event consisted of numerous guided tours, lectures, tours, music, dance and theater performances. Numerous regional companies and institutions used the state horticultural show to present themselves to a broad audience.

An additional budget of around 6.1 million euros was available for holding the state horticultural show.

Later use of the site

In the autumn of 1998, the dismantling of the facilities began, which could no longer be used. Checkout areas at the entrances, beer tents in the catering trade and fences were partially dismantled. Parts of the planting and the exhibition, which would have been too costly to maintain, have been removed.

Nonetheless, around 90 percent of the site has remained almost unchanged and today represents the so-called LGS Park as a new local recreation area in the northern part of the city. As part of the Summer in the Park series , numerous events take place in the park every year; Open-air cinema set up. Part of the site is still fenced, it is cordoned off at night and guarded by a security service.

The city of Neumarkt is responsible for maintaining and maintaining the site, supported by several clubs and associations that have come together for the initiative of goodwill .

The grounds include a beer garden and a mini golf course. The University of Applied Management has set up a branch in the Schauturm .

Others

The notorious robber baron Eppelein von Gailingen was captured in 1371 and sentenced to death in Nuremberg . However, he managed to escape and was not captured again until 1381 in Postbauer-Heng . To rule out another escape, he was brought to nearby Neumarkt and executed there on May 15, 1381 by the wheel . Employees of the Neumarkt City Archives found in 1998 that the bill of 639 pounds, 14 shillings and six hellers for the capture and execution of Eppelein by the city of Nuremberg had never been paid. With interest and compound interest, a debt of around 84 trillion D-Marks was determined in 1998 and jokingly charged to the city of Nuremberg.

Nuremberg's mayor Helen Jungkunz took a visit to the state horticultural show as an opportunity to settle this bill in the form of a chest filled with chocolate coins and presented it to the mayor of Neumarkt. However, shortly afterwards, employees of the Nuremberg State Archives discovered indications in the documents that the original bill was likely to have been paid shortly after Eppelein's execution. However, the sum was not reclaimed.
