City Hall Park

City Hall Park

The new city hall park forms the link between the city of Deggendorf and the Danube. Between the clear room edges of the town hall, the technical college and the hotel, it was designed as an urban park based on its previous function. A spacious terrace in front of the town hall marks the entrance area from the city to the new park areas on the Danube. The town hall park was upgraded with intensive bank planting by the pond, a path accompanying the bank and a small wooden walkway.

Danube Park

The new Danube Park East stands out as an independent, scenic riverside park between the shipyard and the campsite. It is located directly in front of the dike. With various measures, such as the squares and steps at the landing stage, the terraces at the mouth of the Bogenbach and the creation of a city beach, the Danube was included in the park and made tangible. The Danube promenade forms the central access axis of the Danube Park. The urban development goal was the construction of the promenade as a direct extension of Edlmairstraße as a green feeder from the city to the Danube.

The widening of the Bogenbach with the terrace-like usable areas and a beach area west of the autobahn allow special experiences to be had by the water. With the willow hiding place, a playground was built in a natural landscape. A small square marks the connection to the dike gardens.

Danube dike and dike gardens

Dike gardens

The new Danube dike on the left, urban bank of the Danube with the dike promenade running on it is the future main access axis for pedestrian and cycle path traffic in the east-west direction and an effective urban planning tool. The new dike extends over a length of approx. 1.7 kilometers in a straight line from Edlmairstraße to the end of the dike relocation in the northwest and forms the end of the city center towards the Danube.

The dyke gardens and the dyke promenade open up the area as an extension of the technical college as an urban link and, with intensive planting, represent the central element of the urban and landscape renewal. In the form of a garden band, the dyke gardens cover the new parking deck south of the Ackerloh as an artefact.

The dike gardens vary in height between 0–90 cm and are framed with Corten steel. Some of the areas are accessible and can be used as resting and play areas. The planting varies between lawns, intensive greening of different topics (shrubs, alternating florets, grasses) and small trees or large shrubs with underplanting. Large trees are partially planted.

Dike crown

According to the urban planning concept, the dike crown is provided with a row of trees in the western and eastern connecting areas. This row of trees is continued in the area of the dike gardens between the main path connection and the gardens and marks a 9.7 m wide zone that invites you to stroll. The area between the dyke promenade and the dyke gardens was widened at the eastern end to match the course of the parking deck. Games and sports are planned here in different rooms, which are structured by a grove of trees that adjoins the row of trees on the dike promenade. Opposite the large outside staircase, a terrace with a view of the Danube is planned, which can be accessed from the dike promenade via generous tread plates. To the east of the terrace there is the “Donauspiel” between trees, which complements the dike gardens in terms of uses.

Donauspiel along the dike gardens

Between the dike promenade and the curved track, the Donauspiel stretches out, a spacious play area which, in addition to special game events, thematically presents the countries bordering the Danube and shows cultural specialties. A curved, blue band made of elastic plastic (EPDM) forms the central element and symbolizes the Danube, the second longest river on our continent. The tape is embedded in the terrain level at varying heights, inclinations and dimensions and forms a course for running, frolicking, jumping and sitting. Above all, interactive, shared play is encouraged and the water playground is a special highlight.

The accompanying measures

With the state horticultural show, existing urban planning goals such as another Danube crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, the upgrading of the urban Danube bank, sensible and attractive guidance for pedestrians and cyclists - especially long-distance cycle paths that are important for tourism - on the Danube dike and the improvement of the Parking space in the Ackerloh will be implemented. With the Danube Park Deggendorf received a central recreational area on the water.

Pedestrian and cycle path bridge

The 450 meter long bridge is one of the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridges in Europe and was built especially for the Deggendorf State Horticultural Show.

Under the motto “Bridge the Danube - connect the banks, overcome borders”, the city center will be connected to the Danube via park areas and the new foot and cycle bridge to the opposite bank of the Danube. Until now, pedestrians and cyclists could only pass the Danube via the busy Maximilianstrasse. In order to further network the urban area, this new connection was created on the route of the old railway bridge. This brings the districts of Fischerdorf and Natternberg closer to the city and also the Gäuboden and Bavarian Forest are growing closer together. At 456 meters, the new pedestrian and cycle path bridge over the Danube is one of the longest in Europe.

It is a six-span structure up to 8.5 meters high and 4 meters wide with a span of up to 106 meters. 840 tons of structural steel and 1500 cubic meters of concrete were used, and 380 meters of piles were also drilled. In addition, there were 14 kilometers of larch wood planks for the surface, which was laid in such a way that no drainage was required.

Parking deck

The parking deck extends from south-east to north-west along the Danube and leans towards the river on the embankment of the dike. The parking garage is therefore not visible from the Danube and disappears into the terrain profile of the dike. It has 437 parking spaces for cars, six of which are handicapped accessible. The colored, single-storey facade facing north towards the city is divided into three sections by slight kinks. An additional urban planning element is a generous flight of steps leading up from the Ackerloh to the dyke gardens.

costs

For the State Horticultural Show Deggendorf 2014 (including the accompanying urban redevelopment measures in Schaching ), the total cost of creating new green and recreational areas has been around 11 million euros, including 7.6 million euros for the core area of the State Garden Show. The city of Deggendorf will contribute 3.9 million euros. This share of the costs is possible through various grants. These are made up of around 3.6 million euros from the garden show funding program (funding of hiking trails and their signage, accommodation houses and garden shows) of the Bavarian State Ministry for Environment and Health, 1.9 million euros from funds from the European Union and 1, 6 million euros from urban development funding.

Until 2014, the city of Deggendorf invested in its own urban development measures, in particular in the parking deck, pedestrian and cycle bridge projects, as well as in the acquisition of a further 24 million euros. Around half of these investments are also refinanced from urban development funds. The cost of holding the Danube Garden Show is around 7.9 million euros. The majority of this is to be absorbed through entrance fees, leases, sponsors and donations. In the end, the city had a total of around 1.3 million euros in co-payment.
