The State Garden Show Gießen was the 5th State Garden Show (LGS) of the State of Hesse and one of five State Garden Shows in Germany in 2014. It took place from April 26 to October 5, 2014 in the meadows of the Wieseck and Lahn in Giessen , which by three "corridors" were connected across the city. LGS was run by the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Agriculture and Consumer Protection for the State of Hesse and the City of Gießen , which was also the organizer together with the Landesgartenschauen Hessen und Thüringen mbH . The motto of the state horticultural show was "Off to new shores". The logo shows a flower made of five different colored petals, which are formed from thumbprints.

After a feasibility study for the implementation of the State Garden Show in Gießen had been drawn up in 2004/2005, the City Council decided in 2005 to apply for the 5th Hessian State Garden Show in 2014. In March 2008, Gießen was awarded the contract by the Hessian state government against competitors Bad Hersfeld , Bad Sooden-Allendorf and Taunusstein .

As early as March 2009 - for the first time in the run-up to a Hessian state horticultural show - a support association was founded, which attracted the attention of itself and the LGS through planting campaigns and the erection of artificial guide posts - around 9,000 posts were designed by citizens and initiatives in the region and in Gießen (e.g. the Half) and all of Central Hesse .

The Europe-wide invitation to tender between August 2009 and January 2010 for the landscape gardening design resulted in 27 submissions, of which in January 2010 the designs by geskes.hack landscape architects (Berlin) for the Wieseckaue and by A24 Landschaft (Berlin) for the Lahnaue were selected. In June and September 2011, the framework plan for the Lahnaue was approved by the city council.

In the run-up to the State Garden Show, the Giessen Watering Can Museum was founded in 2011 . As a hands-on museum, it is dedicated to the everyday and useful object watering can ; the collections come almost entirely from donations from citizens.

On May 23, 2012, the first symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the State Garden Show took place in the presence of the Hessian Environment Minister Lucia Puttrich . The location was the 720 square meter "Quellgarten", which was created as a new entrance to the city park in the Wieseckaue. On April 26, 2014, the State Garden Show was opened by Prime Minister Volker Bouffier and other personalities.

The state horticultural show and the citizens

A citizens' initiative turned against the encroachments on nature and the waste of public money under the motto "Stop this State Garden Show". A planned from the citizens' initiative petition for a referendum came too late and was therefore formally illegal. A legal dispute by a plaintiff against the city at the Administrative Court ended on March 29, 2012: the petition was declared inadmissible.

In February 2012, the city of Gießen launched the Internet portal "Gießen direkt" as an offer for public participation. During the four-week period, 430 questions from the public about the State Garden Show were asked and answered within 48 hours.

A representative survey of 1,000 people in March 2012 showed a majority in favor of organizing the state horticultural show. A representative survey a year later, on the other hand, showed a majority against the state garden show: 43.3 percent rejected the city's plans, 37.1% supported them and 19.6 percent did not care about the topic.

Concept and venues

The state horticultural show took place at the two locations Wieseckaue and Lahnaue. The meadow of the Wieseck and the two water areas "Schwanenteich" (in the south) and "Neuer Teich" (in the north) were developed into a "science garden" based on the structure of a city park designed by Prof. Günther Grzimek in 1965. Numerous expansion measures were carried out for the state horticultural show, which - like the science axis and the four so-called play clods as well as a skate park and a multifunctional building with rooms for sports clubs, school sports and skaters - will remain in place. A creek was created in the form of a sink garden with Corten steel and forms the so-called “spring garden”. The “molecular gardens” as well as the flower shows and restaurants housed in tents or greenhouses were partly built on a football field and will be dismantled as planned after the end of the LGS. The light church operated by the Evangelical Churches of Hesse and Nassau and by Kurhessen-Waldeck together with the Diocese of Mainz is also a temporary building. Here and on the SWG stage sponsored by Stadtwerke Gießen , most of the events, from live concerts to sports, cinema and comedy, took place. The Wieseckaue area was fenced in and paid for.

The banks of the Lahnaue were also upgraded in the run-up to the state horticultural show through structural measures; In particular, the area around the Rodheimer Brücke experienced a new quality of stay thanks to the redesign of the banks and the establishment of a large playground. At the Klinkelschen Weir, the regional council of Gießen built an extension of its Lahn window , an observation station on a fish ladder , which now offers enough space for environmental education measures. At the end of the Sudetenlandstrasse, a new crossing was built over the Lahn for pedestrians and cyclists: after a competition, the third bridge over the river Christoph-Rübsamen-Steg was named. All events on the Lahn as well as the bank areas were accessible free of charge.

Three so-called corridors connected the two areas: the “Nordstadt-Korridor” linked the spring garden with the new footbridge, along the Sudetenlandstrasse oval beds were laid out, for which citizens and initiatives of the Nordstadt took over the sponsorship. The "Wieseck Corridor" followed the course of the river and was marked by numerous artificial guide posts. The "inner city corridor" led along the tourist attractions New Castle (Gießen) , Botanical Garden Gießen , Old Castle (Gießen) to the city church tower , under which there is a "show place" of the Hesse ARCHAEOLOGY . It was accessed by a regular tramway .

In addition to the State Garden Show, a competition for art in public spaces was held for the first time , which under the motto “Outside” generated numerous applications. Six of them were implemented and showed in their own way the connections between people, the built environment and nature.

Over 2,500 events took place, which were structured thematically and included not only national artists but also regional initiatives such as associations. At halftime, the exhibition had 241,878 visits, with people with a season ticket counted on each visit. 140,185 day tickets had been sold by then, as well as almost 10,000 season tickets. The goal we set ourselves was 700,000 visits. After the end of the LGS on October 5, 2014, a total of 504,458 visits to the Wieseckaue were counted on 163 days of the horticultural show - 109 of them with precipitation. 46.88 percent of them were day visitors, around 7 percent bought an evening menu. Almost 30 percent of the visitors were season ticket holders, of which a total of 10,997 were sold, including 1,029 half-time tickets. No visitors were counted in the entry-free area of the State Garden Show (Lahnaue and corridors), but at least every tenth visitor was there. The organizers have announced figures on income and expenses for the beginning of 2015.
