It took place in the Hessian spa and district town Bad Schwalbach, about 17 kilometers northwest of the state capital Wiesbaden . The grounds of the state horticultural show comprised 12 hectares of spa park area , in two separate park areas, in the Menzebach and Röthelbachtal .

In August 2011, the city of Bad Schwalbach applied for the 6th Hessian State Garden Show 2018 and submitted a feasibility study. In May 2012, the Hessian state government decided in favor of Bad Schwalbach. The constituent meeting took place on January 28, 2014.

The background of the state horticultural show is the decline of the spa business in the city. In 2017, there were 216,000 overnight stays in Bad Schwalbach, compared to 336,000 overnight stays in 2012. The city's hope for a revival of tourism therefore rested on the garden show. 7.25 million euros (of which 3.3 million state subsidy) were invested in the garden show. The running costs were estimated at 7.5 million euros; In the end, the city should have a deficit of 1.2 million euros.
