The 4th Hessian State Horticultural Show took place from April 24th to October 3rd, 2010 under the motto: "Dreamlike gardens in the heart of the city" in Bad Nauheim in the Wetterau district and was one of 6 state horticultural shows in 2010 .
history
As early as 2001/2002 the city of Bad Nauheim had carried out a feasibility study for the implementation of the state horticultural show. The Hessian state government decided in November 2002 to award the 4th Hessian State Garden Show in 2010 to the city of Bad Nauheim. As a result of a realization competition for garden and landscape architects and urban planners in mid-2004, 35 works were submitted. The jury awarded the first prize to the k1 landscape architects - Kuhn Klapka GbR from Berlin , which was then commissioned by the city council to carry out the project. In April 2005, the city decided to found the State Garden Show Bad Nauheim 2010 GmbH . The GmbH was founded in July 2005 and started business immediately. In August 2006, the GmbH moved into the renovated business premises in Sprudelhof 11. On September 20, 2006, the construction work for the state horticultural show began with the first groundbreaking on the circular chestnut in the spa gardens. In December 2007, construction began in Goldsteinpark and by the opening of the state horticultural show in April 2010, the horticultural show plans and the accompanying municipal measures were implemented.
Venues
The two central areas of the State Horticultural Show were the Kurpark and the Goldsteinpark.
Spa gardens
The spa park was rebuilt for the state horticultural show, but retained its historical appearance. Elements of classic garden art and garden monument maintenance were added .
Goldstein Park
The Goldsteinpark was developed into a public park. The forest and open meadow areas also serve for local recreation beyond the state horticultural show .
Sprudelhof
The Sprudelhof with its three hot tubs is located on the edge of the spa park between the train station and Johannisberg. It was created under the art-loving Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and near the Rhine (1868–1937) between 1905 and 1912 and represents the largest closed Art Nouveau complex in Europe.
Front gardens in Bahnhofsallee
As part of the “Green Street” framework project , the homeowners on Bahnhofsallee were asked to redesign their front gardens. Bahnhofsallee is the connecting street between the spa gardens and Goldsteinpark. The state horticultural show funded 30 percent of the costs or up to 20,000 euros. Half of the 13 homeowners participated in the project.
Themed gardens
Under the motto "Crystalline Gardens" , 25 themed gardens were presented during the state horticultural show on an area of 3000 square meters in Goldsteinpark , showing various design options for gardens, for example with Mediterranean influences, Asian references or age-appropriate ideas. With this, the exhibition wanted to approach the different life situations of garden owners. According to the organizer's wishes, the theme gardens should "convey ideas, give suggestions and show a spectrum that is possible in every garden". Different garden situations were presented on identical areas in order to show a wide range of design ideas and philosophies. The layout of the gardens should be reminiscent of the symmetry of crystals. Landscape and garden architects from the Association of German Landscape Architects took on the planning of the 25 themed gardens and developed the ideas for the individual areas. Member companies of the Hessian-Thuringian Horticultural, Landscaping and Sports Field Construction Association, the Hessian Horticultural Association and specialist companies of the Federation of German Tree Nurseries implemented the plans.
The focus of the themed gardens was chosen differently: Some gardens were supposed to impress with the color of the flowers, with areas with two or three colors but also the colorful variety of rose gardens being shown. Other gardens emphasized the shape of the leaf, the coloring or the scent of the plants, or their particular appearance. Still other gardens showed the combination of different materials with seats or so-called natural ponds . Natural stone, concrete stone, wood and modern building materials such as steel or glass were used. In half of the gardens the element "water" was included and varied; whether as a pond, simple fountain, architecturally framed basin.

Garden of Remembrance
One area of the State Horticultural Show was dedicated to the funeral and cemetery sector. As an integral part of the Christian society in Western culture, the custom of decorating graves is widespread. The exhibition wanted to consciously oppose the declining cemetery culture, as the mobile society means that the possibilities of maintaining well-tended graves over great distances are dwindling. Grave design and tombs are an integral part of every state horticultural show. The exhibition showed sample graves, how their design has changed and what is modern today. A total of 27 model graves and three special articles document the standard of modern cemetery culture. Urn graves , row graves and election graves were laid out as examples . In accordance with the changing needs, member companies of the Hessian Gardening Association, specialist group cemetery gardeners, introduced new forms of burial such as community graves or optional graves in special forms with special consideration of the symbolism of the plants.
The regional association of the stonemasons and stone sculptors had announced a competition for the tombs to be exhibited. The designs selected by an expert jury ranged from traditionally crafted to experimental.
Planet trail
The planetary hiking trail was inaugurated on April 21, 2010 with all sponsors and initiators in Bad Nauheim.
Flower shows
Integrated into the Goldsteinpark in the saltworks building, eleven flower shows were presented over the course of the event , showing the diversity of horticultural activity under various themes. The “green associations” such as the Hessian Gardening Association and its specialist groups, the Association of German Florists and a number of horticultural companies , tree nurseries and groups of friends were involved in the flower shows .

In the garden forum of the Hessen State Agriculture Office, visitors received information about gardens, horticulture and related areas. Experts gave tips and advice on the selection, planting and care of fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, roses and vegetables, as well as advice on general and specific plant diseases. The offer was supplemented by practical demonstrations and exhibitions.
