The highest point in Bad Essen, however, is 215 m above sea level. NN on an arable land in the north of Büscherheide. The middle part of the community is flat, an average of 50  m above sea level. Neighboring communities

The municipality of Bad Essen borders - in a clockwise direction, starting in the north - with the following cities and municipalities: Stemwede , Preußisch Oldendorf (both districts of Minden-Lübbecke in North Rhine-Westphalia ), Melle , Bissendorf , Ostercappeln and Bohmte .

Community structure

The municipality is divided into 17 localities :

A peculiarity arises for the approx. 160 inhabitants of the village Büscherheide, which belongs to the North Rhine-Westphalian Prussian Oldendorf , where the pupils go to school. The Evangelical Church of Westphalia and the Archdiocese of Paderborn, which is mainly in North Rhine-Westphalia, are also responsible for churchgoers , as Büscherheide belongs to the parish of the Prussian Oldendorfer district of Börninghausen. In view of this situation, efforts are being made in the district to be incorporated into Preußisch Oldendorf.

history

Development of the place and changing rulers

(Bad) Essen was first mentioned in a document in 1075. The parishes of Barkhausen, Essen and Lintorf were founded around this time.

In 1309, the construction of Wittlage Castle began to secure the ownership claims of the Bishop of Osnabrück over the area.

Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803 and the transition from the Hochstift Osnabrück to the Principality of Osnabrück, Essen came to the Electorate of Hanover . In 1806 there was another change of authority, one now belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia . In the following year, 1807, they became Westphalian, the current municipality now belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia under Jérôme Bonaparte , the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte . In 1811 the area came under the sovereignty of Napoleonic France, and the canton of Essen in the Arrondissement of Osnabrück was created . After the end of the French era, Essen came back to Hanover together with the Principality of Osnabrück, only to become Prussian in 1866 as a result of the German War .

Economic and infrastructure development

Art school in Bad Essen train station

Railway construction

In 1899, the groundbreaking ceremony for the standard gauge railway line of the Wittlager Kreisbahn was carried out in Bad Essen . The first section led from Bohmte via Bad Essen to the Holzhausen-Heddinghausen train station and was inaugurated in 1900. With nine train stations and bus stops, the municipal area was connected to an important infrastructure, which brought about an economic upswing for the area and also made local public transport considerably easier.

Mittelland Canal in Bad Essen

Construction of the Mittelland Canal

A decision of April 1, 1905 approved the construction of the western section of the Mittelland Canal between Bergeshövede (connection to the Dortmund-Ems Canal ) and Hanover , after the Prussian House of Representatives initially rejected the construction in 1903. This first section of the canal also runs through Bad Essen and divides the municipality into a northern and southern half. Around 90 hectares of land were used in the community for the construction .

Health resort and tourism

Bad Essen has officially been allowed to bear the title of bath since 1902 . The main reason for this honor is a brine source 800 m below the surface as the basis of the spa operation. Their salinity is higher than that of the Dead Sea .

Cittàslow project

Bad Essen applied for membership in the Cittàslow movement in the 2010s . The movement started in Orvieto (Italy) in 1999 . In analogy to the slow food movement, it is about preventing the " Americanization " of cities with less than 50,000 inhabitants. Supporting and emphasizing cultural diversity and the own and special values of the city and its surroundings are central Cittàslow goals. In keeping with the name of the movement, Cittàslow cities are particularly concerned with decelerating the pace of life for those who live in them or who linger in them .

In 2015, Bad Essen was awarded the Lower Saxony Future Prize by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs for the project design "Bad Essen will be Cittàslow!" Shortly thereafter, Bad Essen was unanimously accepted into the network as the 14th Cittàslow city in Germany with effect from February 8, 2016 .

Incorporations

Today's municipality of Bad Essen was formed by a municipal reform that came into force on July 1, 1972, from the municipalities of Bad Essen, Barkhausen, Brockhausen, Büscherheide, Dahlinghausen, Eielstädt, Harpenfeld, Heithöfen, Hördinghausen, Hüsede, Linne, Lintorf, Lockhausen, Rabber, Wehrendorf, Wimmer and Wittlage formed. The Wittlage district at that time was dissolved. The newly created community of Bad Essen has since been part of the Osnabrück district . The district of Wittlage was until then one of the few German districts whose seat was in a municipality without city rights.

coat of arms

DEU Bad Essen COA.svg

The coat of arms of the municipality of Bad Essen shows a tinned red shield head with three nicks in silver and an eight-blade blue mill wheel above a blue wave shield base. Since Bad Essen used to belong to the Wittlage office, the battlements shield head is intended to express the relationship to Wittlage Castle. The concept of water belonging to the "bath" is represented by the waves in the base of the shield. The water mill wheel is the figure of the old coat of arms that Bad Essen had before it was merged with sixteen neighboring communities in 1972. The colors red and silver are taken from the coat of arms of the former principality of Osnabrück and his office Wittlage. The design of the coat of arms was made in 1975 by the Osnabrück heraldist Hans Heinrich Reclam.

Culture and sights

State Garden Show 2010

From April 23 to October 17, 2010 the 4th Lower Saxony State Garden Show took place in Bad Essen  . The decision was made on March 31, 2009, around a year before the start of the State Garden Show, as the city of Wiesmoor had originally been awarded the contract for the show, but withdrew its application at short notice.

Despite the short preparation time, the state horticultural show in Bad Essen was a success. Around 500,000 guests, 100,000 more than originally planned, attended the State Garden Show.

One of the two core areas of the State Horticultural Show was the Ippenburg Palace Park . In the years before the State Garden Show, the park was the scene of several land areas and has remained so to this day.

The state horticultural show left a newly designed brine and spa park in the second core area on the southern edge of the town center of Bad Essen. To date are in this

  • the “SoleArena”, a mini graduation tower that is fed from the million year old brine spring below Bad Essen; the brine is misted and trickled into the arena;
  • and the sky terrace, a 300 square meter terrace on the edge of the forest to the brine and spa gardens

preserved. The latter can be used for open-air events.

Museums

On Castle Hünnefeld a private museum on the history of the castle and its inhabitants is operated.

In the auditorium of the secondary and secondary school, technical devices from the past centuries, which belong to the forerunners of modern information technology, are on display for viewing and, by arrangement, for trying out. The topic is "Mobile phones and CO - how we used to find out more".

Natural monument

Dinosaur tracks in Barkhausen

In the district of Barkhausen you can see the 150 million year old dinosaur tracks from Barkhausen in an old quarry , the tracks come from the Elephantopoides barkhausensis and Megalosauropus teutonicus , which belong to the dinosaurs of the Jura . The DiVa Walk is interesting for tourists.

Buildings

The historic town center of Bad Essen with its numerous neat half-timbered buildings and especially the picturesque church square with the St. Nikolai Church in the center is worth seeing . The Hünnefelder Totenhaus , which was the burial place of the von dem Busche-Hünnefeld family from 1752 to 1850, is also located on the church square . Above the entrance there is an inscription from 1752. The former weir store, the small house, dates from 1663 . The weir storage facility was built on two floors in half-timbered construction and later added another storey. Today it is part of a catering business.

At the southern exit of Bad Essen is the historic watermill , which is also the symbol of Bad Essen and adorns the municipal coat of arms. The mill is still functional today and is occasionally used for grinding demonstrations.

Hünnefeld Castle, first mentioned in 1146, is located north of the Mittelland Canal between the districts of Harpenfeld and Wehrendorf . The current mansion dates from the 17th century, the beautiful pigeon tower from 1710. The castle has its own museum on the family history of the Hünnefeld family.

Ippenburg Castle is located in the Lockhausen district not far from Hünnefeld Castle . Count Wilhelm von dem Bussche had the beautiful castle built in the neo-Gothic style from 1862 to 1867. Garden exhibitions are held annually at Ippenburg Castle.

The Wittlage Abbey Castle is located in the Wittlage district. It was built in 1310 at the instigation of the Bishop of Osnabrück and served as security against the County of Ravensberg and the Bishop of Minden . The tower and the gate entrance are still preserved from the original castle complex.

On the ridge of the Wiehengebirge stands the Sun Tin Tower, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the north German lowlands and over the forests of the Wiehengebirge.
