Planimization

Under Planimetrierung ( lat "Planis" → flat, Greek "metrein" → measure, literally..: Area measurement ) or surface area measurement refers to the determination of the surface content of especially irregularly shaped surfaces whose contours described only very laboriously by mathematically defined curves or curve parts can be.

Planimization can be done by counting the surface elements on graph paper, by cutting out the figure and weighing it on a precise scale or by using a mechanical auxiliary device, the so-called planimeter .

Surface areas are very difficult to record with measuring devices . The calculation of an area is usually done arithmetically within the framework of planimetry or stereometry .
