The village , which emerged as a scattered settlement of individual farms on both sides of the Egger stream, was first mentioned in 1188 as "Kedinchem". It was originally an aristocratic seat of the Knights of Kedinchem, who were servants of the Counts of Ravensburg and, from 1264, of the Bishops of Osnabrück. The bishop of Osnabrück gave Telgkamps mill to the Quakenbrücker Burgmann Johann von Arnhorst in 1350 .

Over the centuries the place name and spelling have changed several times: from Kedinchem, Katenchem (1231), Kettinckamp (1426), Ketekampe (1426), Ketenkampe (1512), Keddenkamp (1567), and finally, for around 400 years, Kettenkamp.

Culture and sights

Telgkamp's mill in Kettenkamp

The watermill "Telgkamps Mühle" is located at Eggermühlenbach. A previous building was built in 1350. The current mill started operations in 1850. In the autumn of 1924 the overshot water wheel of the mill was replaced by a turbine. This not only operated the two grinding stages of the mill, it also provided the power for the kneading machine in the adjoining bakery, in which black bread was baked. The mill operation was given up in 1960.

Since the new owner of the mill was not willing to leave it on his farm, the mill was demolished in 1986 and rebuilt elsewhere on Eggermühlenbach. The mill building was inaugurated on September 20, 1988 and is now used as a home. The mill wheel was installed on October 6, 1989.

The mill annex was built in half-timbered construction to match the water mill. The first groundbreaking took place in November 1993. It was inaugurated in April 1995. In the building there is old small agricultural equipment and the “Kottmannsche Hofmühle”, which is powered by a horse peg.

The water mill, together with the entire mill area, is the most important attraction of the place, in which there are many restored half-timbered courtyards, most of which are no longer used for agricultural purposes.
