coat of arms

The Tor camp, entrance area to the coming, is also adorned with the coat of arms of the municipality of Rieste

The coat of arms of the municipality of Rieste shows the so-called camp gate in silver on a red shield. The eight-pointed cross refers to the Order of St. John or the Order of Malta. You enter the pilgrimage site of Lage through this gate from the west. The camp gate is the relic of a former large gatehouse from 1697. This was demolished in 1864 for unknown reasons.

The municipality also has a logo that will be used in particular for tourism and marketing purposes. It shows the stylized letter "R" over blue and green waves. These should represent the element of water, which has dominated the place for centuries, and the vast nature of the municipality.

Buildings

Place of pilgrimage and future situation

From 1245 to 1810, the Order of St. John and the Order of Malta maintained an important settlement with the Coming Location. The current building complex of the Coming was built after the Thirty Years War .

After years of commercial use, the Roman Catholic diocese of Osnabrück , in whose territory the municipality of Rieste is located, bought the Kommende in 1999 and handed it over to the nuns from the Dominican monastery "Mater Dolorosa" from Klausen / Mosel. Since then, the Dominican convent "The Savior on the Crucifixion" has existed in the rooms of the Kommende Lage.

Next to the monastery is today's Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of St. John the Baptist from 1426. The tower was built between 1902 and 1904. The church has a rich interior with three baroque altars and a Gothic vault, which was stuccoed in 1733. The most important piece of equipment in the church, however, is the life-size "Holy Cross to Lage", which was created around 1300 and has been venerated since the 14th century. The faithful carry the 134 kilogram medieval cross around the church to this day and pray for the sick and the dying.

Various relics are embedded in the head of the crucified, such as stones and mementos from the Holy Land. They are wrapped up and labeled with old pieces of paper: "From the cross of Christ, from the Calvary, from Mount Sinai, from the tomb of Christ, from the white robe of Christ, from the manger of the Lord". Relics of the apostles Andrew and Bartholomew are also admitted, as well as relics of the martyrs George, Petronilla, Regina, Barbara, Sebastian, Margarita, Archbishop Thomas Becket of Canterbury and Cordula. During the restoration in 1987, memorabilia from Blessed Sister Maria Euthymia were added to the cross.

Since 1995, the Diocese of Osnabrück and the parish have been inviting people to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14th) and the following Sunday to the diocesan pilgrimage “With the sick and for the sick”. The bishop of Osnabrück or his auxiliary bishop celebrates Holy Mass on the church square. After the service, the bishop, priest and deacons give the personal blessing for the sick.

Evangelical Lutheran Emmaus Chapel

Rieste has always belonged to the parish of Bramsche. In order to attend the service, the Evangelical Lutheran Christians had to travel the long way to Bramsche to the church, while the Catholics went to Lage after the Thirty Years' War. Pastor Wöbking pointed out in 1900 that it was desirable to build a chapel in Rieste. The foundation stone was laid on May 18, 1912, and the chapel was consecrated a year later, on April 8, 1913. The architect was the church builder Rudolph Eberhard Hillebrand from Hanover. The chapel was built from Ueffeln quarry stone. The interior has an Art Nouveau painting. The chapel is named after the choir window with the Emmaus scene behind the altar. The window was designed and manufactured by the Linnemann workshop, Frankfurt a. M.

tourism

Open-air cinema at the Alfsee

Tourism at the Alfsee is an important economic factor for the community and region. In the western municipality there is a large holiday park with holiday homes, several campsites and sports facilities, which has been in existence since the late 1970s. The main lake serves as a reservoir for water from the Hase River. Until the basin was put into operation, there were repeated floods in the low-lying area of Bramsche-Rieste-Bersenbrück. The created reservoir was used for tourism with a boat harbor and sailing school and offered the opportunity for sailing and surfing, but has now been declared a bird sanctuary and largely closed to water sports. In the immediate vicinity is the Dubbelausee as a swimming lake with two water skiing facilities . The place is also popular with bicycle tourists. It is on the route of the Hase-Ems-Tour, and there are also some signposted cycle paths in the town.

Rieste has the highest number of overnight stays in the Osnabrück district. The youth hostel, inaugurated in 2000, is located near the recreation facilities and has 172 beds. In 2016 there were over 25,200 overnight stays, which is an increase of 7.1% compared to the previous year.

traffic

The Rieste stop in the center of the village is on the Delmenhorst – Hesepe railway line , which crosses the municipality from south-west to north-east. When the Osnabrück - Vechta railway line opened in 1900, a train station was also built in Rieste and the town was connected to the rail network. There is still a train stop here today. The NordWestBahn has taken over the route since 2000 and runs here every hour. The railway line bears the official name RB 58 (Bremen-Vechta-Osnabrück). On the site of the former railway building, the new town hall was built in 2005, which has toilets, an overhang and a ticket machine on the rear facing the railway track.

Rieste can be reached via the Neuenkirchen / Vörden junction of the A 1 and via the federal road 68 . However, the Federal Ministry of Transport has already approved its own “Rieste” motorway junction, which will probably be implemented by 2021 in the southern area of the Lower Saxony Park.
