Life

Gustav Adolf von Varendorff was born in 1739 on Gut Rieste near Bramsche in the Osnabrück region. He came from a branch of the Westphalian noble family of the Lords of Varendorff , who had been on Gut Varendorf near Rieste in today's Lower Saxony since the 17th century and had also been naturalized in Denmark since 1774 . His father was Johan Dietrich Georg von Varendorff, Herr auf Rieste, his mother was Maria Odilia Klara von Freytag . He was married to Sophie von Warnstedt . Gustav Adolf von Varendorff embarked on a military career after his youth as a squire at the Braunschweiger Hof in 1757. In 1758 he took part in the Battle of Krefeld on the part of the Electorate of Braunschweig and became second lieutenant in the ducal body regiment. A few years later, Gustav Adolf von Varendorff went into the service of the Kingdom of Denmark and turned to Norway in 1773 , where he became captain of the Nordenfjeldske Infantry Regiment and later also participated in the mapping of Norway. In 1777 he was an officer in the Oldenburg and later in the Schleswig infantry regiment . Gustav Adolf von Varendorff took part in the Russo-Swedish War on the side of Denmark in 1788 as adjutant general of the Schleswig - Holstein governor Karl von Hessen-Kassel . In the years 1789 to 1797, the Schleswig Infantry Regiment, under his leadership as major , compiled a comprehensive set of maps of the Duchy of Holstein , the Hochstift Lübeck and the Hanseatic City of Hamburg . In 1806 Gustav Adolf von Varendorff was appointed as a colonel commander of the Schleswig Infantry Regiment, led commands on the Eider and the Danish Baltic Sea islands of Møn , Lolland and Falster in 1805 and 1807 and was promoted to major general in 1808 . His descendants were also in royal Danish service.

Works

In the years 1789 to 1796, the Schleswig Infantry Regiment compiled the " Topographical Military Chart of the Duchy of Holstein " ("Varendorf Maps") on behalf of the Schleswig-Holstein governor Karl von Hessen-Kassel under the direction of Major Gustav Adolf von Varendorff . It was a military map series of 68 individual maps in the original scale 1: 26.293. One geographic mile corresponded to a Hamburg or Holstein foot on the map. The topographical survey of Holstein was followed by a cartography by the Hochstift Lübeck and the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The recordings were made before coupling .
