history

Menslage was first mentioned in 1188 as mencelage . In the following year the spellings Menkelage or Mencelaghe and around 1350 Menslaghe ; The current spelling has been used since 1442. The origin of the name is subject to different interpretations. While it was initially assumed that Menslage meant a depression overgrown with mint , which would be quite conceivable in the humid and fertile glacial valley of the Hase, today it is assumed that the name has something to do with the Meyerhof zu Menslage, which still exists today and presumably expires a Franconian royal or military court built around 800.

Possibly the first inhabitants were "Menken" or "Mensken" - as monks were called earlier - and that their dwelling was called Menkelage , from which Menslage could have developed. In any case, it is proven that at the time of Charlemagne, monks were active in the construction of this Meyerhof and an army camp in what is now the district of Herbergen.

Another interpretation finally relates to the ministerial family of those from Menslage, who belonged to the service team of Counts Otto and Johann von Oldenburg, who in turn owned said Meyerhof around 1245 and who founded a Cistercian monastery on the extensive grounds of the Meyerhof , which was initially called "Rosenthal “And moved from Menslage to the Börsteler Wald in 1252 , from which the present-day, free-worldly ladies' monastery in Börstel emerged . The first information about an owner of the Meyerhof brings a Quakenbrücker document from 1486, in which a Meyer tho Menslage is mentioned - possibly a member of this ministerial family.

The Marienkirche in the center of the village was founded in 1247 by the Counts of Oldenburg with the permission of the Abbot of Corvey Monastery . With this the parish of the mother church in Löningen took place and the parish of Menslage was created. The church, built in early Gothic style from lawn iron stone, was initially built without a tower, which was only added later in 1579 and was used for the Ueffelner sandstone . Around the cemetery on the north side of the church, granaries were built from rock stones, which were used by the population to store grain. The result was a closed square that was only accessible through two entrances: The Andorfer and Herberger Pforte. When there was a risk of war, the residents escaped to this secure place. Over time, the granaries lost their importance because the farmers preferred to store the valuable grain in safe places on their own farms; one of the old storehouses was converted into a council storehouse, in which the church council met in the future and living and working rooms were created from the others, mainly the workshops of the churchyards and Wörden residents .
