history
Ueffeln was first mentioned in 1292 in connection with the consecration of today's Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary. The parish of Ueffeln-Balkum was created in the same year from the residential areas Bockwiede, Bottum, Bühren and Riesau as well as the later farmers Balkum and Ueffeln.
There is a megalithic grave near the present-day outskirts , which indicates an early settlement.

Legend of the Schwedenstein
In the north of Ueffeln there is the largest boulder in the area, called "Matthiesing's offering stone " or the Schwedenstein. When the villagers of that time began building a church in 1292 at the request of the Bishop of Osnabrück, the devil appeared to them during the construction. He wanted to know what the people were building, and the cunning Ueffelner replied that it should be an inn. But when, one day after the building was completed, he found a church and not an inn, he was very angry and traveled to Sweden to block the entrance to the church with a large stone. It was clear to the devil that he had to hurry, because with the first cockcrow his power would be extinguished. In anger, he threw the stone as far as he could, but it did not reach the church. It fell into a field near the cemetery, where it still lies today.
